What to do when an invoice remains unpaid
Gather the records of the work, outstanding amount and due date. A clear claim starts with a clear account.
1. Check what remains due
Separate overdue invoices, partial payments and credits. Avoid claiming the same sum twice. Keep the agreement or accepted quotation and proof of delivery.
- Each invoice number and date.
- Due date and outstanding amount.
- Payments received and the invoices they apply to.
2. Keep communications
Keep emails and messages acknowledging the debt or disputing the work, plus earlier demands and receipt records. The lawyer will assess what needs to be established and the required prior steps.
3. Review a settlement before signing
A payment plan must identify amounts, dates and consequences of default. A favourable decision is not the same as payment: solvency and possible enforcement must also be assessed.
